E-Commerce Packaging and International Sizing Guide
While the metric system is the global standard, the United States relies heavily on the imperial measurement system. For e-commerce cross-border sellers and overseas shoppers, understanding precise dimension conversions is essential to avoid sizing returns and unexpected shipping charges.
1. Amazon FBA Dimensional Weight Optimization
Carriers like UPS, FedEx, and Amazon FBA calculate billable shipping weight based on package volume. The dimensional divisor for US domestic shipments is 139: Dimensional Weight (lbs) = (Length × Width × Height) ÷ 139. Compressing lightweight bulky products can save upwards of $2 to $5 per shipment.
2. Shoe Width Letter Codes (B, D, 2E)
Unlike length measurements, US shoe sizing also includes width designations:
- B: Narrow for men, standard medium for women.
- D: Standard medium for men, wide for women.
- 2E / 4E: Wide to extra-wide for broader feet.
